Amid a blur of rain and swirling winds, another term is here. Just. And this one’s already living up to its reputation of being cold and wintery for us!
I’d be kidding if I didn’t admit that this one has come with a sprinkling of second guessing.
What do my kids really need to focus on at the moment?
What needs to be the next step in their learning?
Am setting them up well for the future?
And then: are we truly doing the best by each of our children?
How can I be sure we’re covering what’s most important?
You know, the usual. Just in case you think you’re alone in that: trust me when I say that you’re not!!
But, rather than being self-condemning, those questions are a reminder to keep my focus in the right place. To keep a holistic perspective. And as a result of them, this term (like all terms) there are goals that emerge from them to shape the “what” that we’ll be doing.
For example, I’ve noticed a need for my kids to be confronted with hard things, and learn strategies for how to approach the seemingly impossible. So, a practical step towards this? Problem solving and brain teasers. They’re something I plan for ALL of us to enjoy tackling this term. Hubby included. I secretly love them, and hope to inspire them with my enthusiasm, while growing a little more of that out-of the box thinking.
That’s a little insight into the way I think. How about you?
Do you have a particular overarching goal that’s your focus at the moment, beyond the academic?
You’re welcome to share here, but even if you don’t feel comfortable doing that, I encourage you to think about it. You probably have one anyway (because you know your kids best!) and it may help to articulate it.
Remember: goals aren’t just about ticking academic boxes. They’re about inspiring your young people to become thoughtful, considerate, articulate thinkers and learners.
Anyway, that’s it from me for now. Time to go and face the music.
Stay awesome, and enjoy your kids!

P.S. Isn’t that glitter timer cute? I figured why not inspire learning in a new term with something (kind of) practical and pretty to accompany it. (Honestly? I plain forgot to pull it out earlier in the year when I bought it). Suggestions on what, are welcome!
