Have you ever thought “can’t I just have a bad day all on my own?!!!” Some days it really feels like you can’t catch a break, doesn’t it?
That’s because YOU set the tone.
This is such a powerful (& yet somewhat frustrating, right?!) thing to realise. It means that our bad days feel like they turn into everyone’s bad days. (That’s the hard, and sometimes overwhelming part).
But the beautiful thing is, that you always have a choice. You can deliberately set the tone in your home. (Yes, even on a bad day!)
How? Choose to start each day by appreciating where you’re at in your journey – wherever that might be – and thinking about what kind of tone you are setting. What kind of atmosphere are you cultivating? Prioritise something that you know will help you with your own headspace. And your family with theirs.
That might be:
>> playing music that lifts your spirits
>> lighting a candle or a diffuser
>> reading your Bible or something inspiring
>> stepping outside for a moment of fresh air
>> exercising
>> actually sitting down to eat breakfast
…and the list goes on.
The beauty of these, is that they will have a flow-on effect. Things like music and scented candles have the potential to lift everyone’s mood (if that kind of approach works for you, that is!) – and so will simple things like taking the time to sit with your kids at breakfast.
Just like life, we also know that it won’t always work out perfectly.
The best of intentions, and all that.
But that’s where grace – and a new day – comes in. And your kids get to watch and learn alongside you. Including on those days that we find ourselves needing to apologise. Because we all have those, too. We’re human, after all!
The bottom line is, you know YOU best.
You also know your limits best.
And thinking about the tone you’re setting, will impact the haven you’re creating.
So: what kinds of things help YOU to set the tone in your home?
