Book lists for the whole family…
As a self confessed bibliophile who owns an extensive collection of my own and still manages to borrow and buy even more… I’m a firm believer in the adage that you can never have too many books! Can I get a show of hands?!
Within this page I’ve shortlisted some of my favourite reading recommendations into two book lists. Eight just for you, and eight for the whole family. As you can imagine, there are SO many to choose from and these are just a handful of them. But it should be less overwhelming for you that way, in theory!
By the way, did you know that I’m working on creating a downloadable resource with age appropriate book lists right now? Subscribe now if you’d like to get that to your inbox when it’s finally released. I’d love to send it your way!
8 great non-fiction books for YOU to read…
There are always more books to read than time to read them, don’t you think?! I’ve condensed my personal reading lists down to my eight TOP favourites for you, here. Some are just because, some are homeschool-related… all are worth the read in my opinion! Of course there are plenty of others, but this’ll do for now! ; – )
Flourish – Chris Bovill
Teaching from Rest – Sarah Mackenzie
Heart to Heart with Rosie Boom – Rosie Boom
All Along You Were Blooming – Morgan Harper Nichols
Dumbing Us Down – John Taylor Gatto
Growing Slow – Jennifer Dukes Lee
For the Children’s Sake – Susan Schaeffer Macaulay
The Three R’s – Ruth Beechick
By the way, if you’re a homeschooler, be sure to scroll all the way to the bottom of this page for my bonus TOP TIP on researching curriculum!
8 favourite family reads…
Reading aloud is something that I intend to do far more than we actually do, in reality. But every little bit counts – right?! Below I’ve trimmed my list down to seven of our TOP favourite books and series:
The Owl who was Afraid of the Dark – Jill Tomlinson
a sweet, humorous journey through dealing with fear of the dark.
Winnie the Pooh – A A Milne
the original version is incredibly witty, and so much fun!
Charlotte’s Web – E B White
we laughed AND cried our way through this one. Beautiful!
The Barn Chronicles – Rosie Boom
a NZ favourite by a veteran homeschooler
The Chronicles of Narnia – C S Lewis
what more can I say?!
The Green Ember Series – S D Smith
we can’t say enough good things about this one!!
The Silver Sword – Ian Serraillier
such a powerful story, in nice-sized chapter chunks.
The Wingfeather Saga – Andrew Peterson
intense in parts (best for older kids), but witty & richly literary.
Don’t forget, if you’d like tailored resource and book recommendations for your family, you’re always welcome to head to my Contact section and book your video consultation with me.

TOP TIP for researching curriculum…
Don’t be deterred by this name, even if you’re not after a faith-based homeschool approach. The website below is reliably the BEST place I’ve encountered to find sample pages of various books, resources and curriculum. In other words, it’s as “close as you can get” to flicking through the pages in real life. Please note: this is NOT an affiliate link, just a personal recommendation that has worked well for me over the years. They sell a huge range, so I recommend scanning their homeschool section:
Their prices are great too, for those who are more local for shipping. And for those in NZ, I’ve found that they’re comparable to anywhere else when it comes to overall cost, even when you add postage. Especially when it comes to things that are harder to source here, locally. We’ve ordered from them in the past and found them good to deal with.
By the way, if you’re in NZ, remember to head to my New Zealand Launchpad for a curated list of tips, advice, resources and links that will help you homeschool successfully.
Lastly…
Whether you’re already a bibliophile, are working on it, or have kids who are reading you out of house and home… know that you are always welcome here. Us book lovers have to stick together, after all!
Stay awesome!
