I was chatting with a friend about a time when one of my kids had come up with an arguably witty response to a request of mine. And echoing my frustration that they weren’t just getting on with the task. Her comment is one that has rung around my head so very often, since.
“Well… you ARE raising independent thinkers!”
That’s it, isn’t it? We’re growing our children to think outside the box. To have thoughtful conversations with us. To question things. It’s just that some days we’d prefer they didn’t practise on us, am I right?!?!
I couldn’t argue with it when my friend said it, because this what I WANT for my kids.
To not stick to the status quo.
To stand up for themselves and for those who need a voice.
To see what others don’t.
To be independent thinkers.
And while I’ll continue to train them in how to do this respectfully, I find myself grateful for the privilege of raising my children this way. Curly questions and all.
How about you?
