Does your kitchen bench accumulate “stuff” like mine?! And do you always land the job of clearing it, because no one else knows where to put it? (Just because we don’t have anything else to do, right?)
Even though everything on mine (is meant) to have a home, it’s the little bits that pile up. Then, locating a pen or notepaper when you need one in a hurry, becomes impossible. So, I decided to find an obvious solution to at least one of these frustrations, that NO ONE can miss. And no – it’s not a basket or a box this time!
I repurposed glass jars, to hold some of our constantly-used stationery, where it will always been seen.
It’s not all our stationery, by any means. And they were once organised (you know, pencils in one and pens in another, with erasers in the little one so they’re easy to grab). But, well, life happens – and now I’m just happy they’re in the jar wherever, instead of lying around. Pick your battles, right?! BUT as you already know about me… I like pretty things.
So, I bought a cute (cheap) notepad that I knew I’d like to keep beside them. And picked up some little trays that some store had on clearance.
And added the (unfortunately-now-dead-but-the-blue-sand-still-looks-cute) plants my kids made and brought home from one of their extra curricular activities.
And: wallah! I have a purposeful space, that I like to look at, and reflects US. It’s one little thing that helps to make our home, our haven.
Even though my personal preference would be to hide things like this out of sight, there’s a reality that comes with having a family who are always around. It means that function HAS to come first. For everyone’s sanity, including mine!
And, I actually like it.
It shows that we really do live here.
So far so good: we’re a couple of years down the track from when I originally set this up, and it’s working really well (It did spend some time on another shelf, but no one was walking the extra couple of strides to return things there… so back to the kitchen bench it went).
How about you? Has this helped? Do you have another suggestion? We’d love to hear!
