Quality over quantity…
Did you know that the quality of what you offer as a homeschooler, is equivalent to that of a tutor?
Stop and think about that for a moment.
You tailor your homeschool to meet your family’s needs and the needs of each child. You spend time 1-1 helping them to grasp new concepts, learning from their mistakes and celebrating their lightbulb moments. (And yes, there is only one of you to go around, but can I just say that I think you do an amazing job?)
Those of you in NZ know that our government’s expectation of us, is that we teach our children “as regularly and as well as” children in public schools. Our signed exemptions promise that we will do just this. So let’s compare:
As a teacher, I always did the absolute best I could for my students. I poured heart and soul into it. But you know what? There was still only one of me to go around. And we’re talking 31 students at the peak.
Let’s be honest. It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking that you don’t do “enough” as a homeschooler, especially if you look at your counterparts running 9am to 3pm school days.
But when you break it down, have you stopped to consider how much of a typical school day involves 1-1 time with students?
Because THAT is what you need to be considering.
Every little bit of what you do, counts.
Quality over quantity is the measuring stick that helps you to shift from a traditional school mindset – you know, the one you probably grew up with – to a homeschool headspace.
It’s not about filling in hours of your children’s time to match the quantity of time they would spend if they were in school.
It’s about meeting each child where they’re at, and guiding them forward at their own pace, step by step.
Quality over quantity.
That’s the beauty of the flexibility we have!
Don’t get me wrong: I think we have some amazing teachers out there who do an excellent job.
But you’re not them, and you don’t have to be.
No doubt you’re wondering, though… HOW do you know you’re meeting your kids where they’re at? HOW do you know that you’re giving them what they need, and extending them like you should?
For that, you’ll need to continue on to my next two instalments in this series, all about defining your goals, and the HOW of implementing all this. And remember… they may not quite be framed in the way you expect!
If you’ve found this to be valuable, it would mean a lot to me if you’d consider passing it along to someone else who would appreciate it. Because, after all, we’re all in this together.
‘Til next time, stay awesome!
