Measuring Stick #2: Am I doing enough?

The juggling act…

It’s a juggling act, isn’t it? All the things that life requires of us, alongside the challenges and privilege of homeschooling?

So, what if you told yourself that it’s ok to not do everything?

That it’s ok if something feels like it’s going by the wayside?

That it’s ok to notice the seasons, and plan accordingly?

Many years ago, as a freshly graduated teacher, my first appointed mentor offered a piece of advice that I have never forgotten:

“Teaching is a juggling act. There will always be a ball on the ground. Just make sure it’s a different one each term.”

Replace ‘teaching’ with ‘homeschooling’ or even just ‘life,’ and you have a piece of wisdom that will carry you far!

The fact is, if you’re anything like me, you will NEVER get through everything that you wish you could. There literally isn’t enough hours in a day. Trust me, I’ve counted them!

BUT… what you can do, is this:

  • Regularly take stock of where things are at.
  • Notice the balls on the ground.
  • Leave them there for now. (Seriously!)
  • And in your next round of planning, account for that dropped ball.
  • Rinse, and repeat.

So, you ask, how exactly is this a measuring stick for whether or not you’re doing enough?

Well, it’s a reminder that nothing is set in stone.

You don’t have to get it all right, all of the time.

If you find that you do: brilliant! But DON’T measure your “enough” on the immediate feelings you have, without taking into account the bigger picture.

You’re a work in progress.
Your kids are a work in progress.
And the juggling act is real!

“Enough” isn’t measured by the number of balls you have in the air, or on the ground, at any given time.

It’s measured by the total airtime each ball gets, in the end.

Be encouraged! And keep being awesome.
