Making spaces work: maximising your corners

One main living space.

Five individuals.

Shared rooms.

None spare.

Homeschooling everywhere.

AND we’re a musical family.

So how on earth do you fit it all in?!

As with most of my house, I’ve tried many iterations over the years. Too many things; too little space… and that’s even after all the culls I’ve done over the years.

I’m sure you know the feeling!

For the past year or so, zoning off a narrow area behind some couches to be a designated music area, has helped. The photos in the top image are taken as-is.

There are more instruments there than usual right now. Our music stands are folded and hidden behind the curtain in the corner of the room. The black ottoman is full of percussion instruments, and the piles of music books you see there are the ones I thought I would part with in my recent cull, but decided to keep, and are currently un-homed! And that doesn’t even include the clarinets, flutes and recorders stored in my kids’ rooms.

Our lounge room is definitely a full space (& I’ve often lamented not having an extra room for some of these things) but I’ve learned to love it.

I love that it’s an invitation to play music together in our communal space.

I love that it’s always out and easy to access, even when the room feels busier because of it.

And… I love that it’s also the perfect corner to (almost) hide the baskets and piles of washing that needs folding! (Although that may not always a be good thing when I forget it’s there until a laundry volcano erupts…)

Whether music is the thing that fills your home or there’s something else (perhaps a whole lot of somethings), the key here is to consider how you can use every little bit of your home. Corners, and all. Get creative if you must. Because if there’s one thing I’ve learned? Where there’s a will, there’s a way!

Are you a musical family? Is there something else you have a LOT of? Do you, like us, have just the one main living space and have to juggle it to fit what you need? How do you store it all? We’d love to know!

And if you’re stuck for ideas on a particular space in your home, feel free to ask in the comments. Take a moment to respond to others, too, if you have a suggestion that could help. Supporting each other is why we’re here, after all. Oh, and do feel free to Contact me with suggestions for future blogposts that will help you as you work on creating your haven.

Stay awesome!
