Let’s talk flexibility for a minute.
Hubby’s been admitted to hospital, and our week so far has consisted of the need for A LOT of flexibility. (He’s ok – a nasty bug collided with his autoimmune condition and landed him there, but we’re relieved he’s in the right place for the care he needs to get better).
Cue these beautiful handmade painted/drawn cards (the third is tucked carefully in the envelope with a teeny tissue-wrapped gift) that my kids made for me to take to him when I visited today. They gave me permission to share this photo with you.
When I think about what our kids need most at these times, I’m always reminded: people first. Relationships first.
I’d much rather they know how to send a heartfelt message to show they care, than to be able to do a row of sums in a book. (Both matter, but right now? Other stuff trumps math.)
Grace is needed, in screeds, for weeks like these.
Lots of hugs, lots of chats and just enough rhythm and routine (of sorts) to set the tone.
We all have weeks like this, don’t we? Whether it’s illness in the house, a traumatic situation, hospitalisation, or just plain exhaustion… you name it.
Wherever this finds you, I just want to send you a hug and encourage you to look for to ways to appreciate where you are in your journey.
Remember to pay attention to what you need, too, so that you’re not filling your kids up from a tank that’s running on empty.
So if that means leaving the math today, because you know that you’ll all be fighting it anyway – consider this your permission to just leave it! It’ll still be there next time you’re ready for it.
If that means inviting a friend over for coffee so that you feel a little less alone – do it!
And if that means letting the housework slide for a day or two… there’s always tomorrow, right?!
And us? We’re taking it one day at a time right now.
And that’s ok. It’s one of the things I’m truly thankful for about homeschooling.
How about you?
